This 2-hr workshop examines many aspects of being a successful private practitioner. Topics covered include a self-evaluation to see if you want to be in private practice, marketing and advertising to build a client base, how to transition into private practice, ethical considerations of working in a private practice, self-care and practical business and insurance aspects of your practice.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the personal skills and characteristics desirable for success in a private practice setting;
  • Gain awareness of the multitude of practical (office rental and set-up, security, etc.) and business (marketing, partnership, financial, insurance, etc.);
  • Increase knowledge of ethical and self-care issues related to private practice.

Stephen Carter, PhD

Dr. Carter has worked in private practice since 1992 and has done multiple presentations to psychology groups on starting and enhancing a private practice and on a variety of topics ranging from high conflict divorce to stress management, school violence and assessment. In his own work, Dr. Carter works in the area of counselling and assessment with children, teens, adults and families. Hi recent focus has been on supervising/mentoring psychologists in developing their own skills with high conflict divorce interventions.
