Consultation for Mental Health Clinicians Working With Older Adults
To register for this consultation series, please (1) read the series overview below, (2) review the series prerequisites, (3) read the expected code of conduct, and then (4) choose a consultation group. These items are organized as tabs on this page.
Summary of Consultation Program
This program is intended to provide expert feedback and resources for addressing older adult mental health needs across care settings and presenting concerns. This collegial consultation opportunity is not clinical supervision; participants must maintain their own clinical license. Rather, this consultation group provides an opportunity to receive state-of-the-art professional consultation from geropsychologists aimed to advance clinical practice with older adults.
This program is aimed to support licensed mental health professionals in practice to feel more prepared and confident in working with older adults. We know the population is aging and more clinicians are seeing older adults in their practices; many of these clinicians have not received training in aging. This consultation group meets for 90 minutes monthly across six months.
In preparation for consultation, consultees are asked to read the 2022 Special Issue of Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice covering the geropsychology foundational knowledge competencies or have completed the Rush Foundational Competencies in Older Adult Mental Health online program (information on both options will be provided after registration). Consultees will also complete an initial survey based on the Pikes Peak Self-Assessment Tool, Version 1.4 (Karel et al., 2010; Karel et al., 2012) to evaluate confidence (rather than competence) in the five geropsychology domains, including general knowledge about adult development, aging, and older adult populations; foundations of professional geropsychology practice; professional geropsychology functioning; assessment knowledge and skills; intervention knowledge and skills; and consultation knowledge and skills. During the first consultation group meeting, consultees are invited to share about their self-assessment results and goals for the group. Although the remaining sessions are flexible to the needs of the consultees, they will follow a general structure of case presentation by a consultee and discussion with training by the consultant as appropriate.
LIVE CREDIT ONLY, not recorded. Consultation groups are limited to 5 consultees. Each consultation group session includes a case presentation followed by discussion of the case.
This program was developed by a subcommittee created at the Building Bridges Conference: Generating Resources for Geropsychology Education, supported by The Council of Professional Geropsychology Training Programs (CoPGTP) and Society of Clinical Geropsychology (SCG), among many other organizations.
