Three “hot topics” of current concern to psychologists as a result of evolving practice in the post-COVID era include managing professional boundaries, finances and economics, and the role of emerging technologies in psychological practice. Each third of this three-hour workshop will focus on one on these content areas with special attention to ethics and best practices. Aspects of the new draft of the APA ethics code will be integrated in the presentation. Dr. Gerry Koocher will begin by considering traditional professional boundary limits and progress to evolving issues related to accessing online information. He will move on to consider evolving practices in health care reimbursement, the cost-benefit ratio of training for psychological practice, and the ethics of non-participation in reimbursement systems. Dr. Koocher will wrap up with a focus on ethical considerations in adopting and adapting to technologies related to psychological practice including artificial intelligence systems.

The Supreme Court’s 2022–2023 Term included several cases that will interest mental health professionals. One demonstration of this interest was that the American Psychological Association filed amicus curiae briefs in three cases. In those cases, the Court struck down racial preferences in college admissions, upheld child custody provisions of the Indian Child Welfare Act, and permitted a creative web designer to refuse to create a website that amounted to “compelled speech.” The Court also struck down a “loan forgiveness” plan, clarified the False Claims Act’s relevance to false billing for psychological testing, and decided several disability cases. The article reviews these and other significant decisions and notes that “the shadow docket” continues to be a controversial but important way for the Court to oversee the work of lower courts. An analysis of the Term concludes that the Court was less divided this Term than last. The Court struggles with ethics and the appearance of ethical problems. It has accepted cases for the next Term involving the insanity defense, taxing “unrealized” income, funding for the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, and social media.

Evidence-based practice inherently involves critical thinking and flexibility to deliver these treatments in an efficacious yet tailored manner. Experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic presented us with a new question: When is avoidance an adaptive response to a shifting and uncertain environment, and when is it a symptom? We discuss ways in which avoidance emerged following the start of the pandemic. Clinical and ethical considerations are also presented, with a focus on discerning when avoidance is problematic versus a reasonable response to a novel stressor, as well as how to responsibly proceed when the context of treatment dramatically changes.

Burnout in health care has received considerable attention; widespread efforts to implement burnout reduction initiatives are underway. Healthcare providers with marginalized identities may be especially at risk. Health service psychologists are often key members of interprofessional teams and may be asked to intervene with colleagues exhibiting signs of burnout. Consequently, psychologists in these settings can then find themselves in professional quandaries. In the absence of clear guidelines, psychologists are learning to enhance their scope of practice and navigate ethical guidelines while supporting colleagues and simultaneously satisfying organizational priorities. In this paper we (a) provide an overview of burnout and its scope, (b) discuss ethical challenges health service psychologists face in addressing provider burnout, and (c) present three models to employ in healthcare provider burnout and well-being.

Mindfulness-based therapies are gaining more traction in research and treatment settings due to the ample evidence supporting their efficacy for symptom relief, focused awareness, and stress management. While the spiritual practice of mindfulness has been around for thousands of centuries, clinical application has only been popularized for the past several decades. It has stepped into mainstream Western culture as a secular practice and scientific technique. It has demonstrated adaptability as a complementary intervention that can cut across diagnosis and theoretical orientation, and promote cultural awareness and sensitivity to diversity. Not only can this be incorporated as a healing tool for clients, but it can also benefit the therapist by enhancing emotional well-being, improving beneficial therapeutic qualities, and enriching the clinical work to minimize burnout. A discussion regarding ethical considerations and practice tools will be reviewed to provide the clinician an essential understanding of utilizing mindfulness in their practice.

In recent years there has been increased interest by young people and their families in seeking various types of gender-affirming care. In Fall 2022, the World Professional Association for Transgender Health issued updated guidelines that reflect considerably greater attention to the needs of transgender and gender diverse youth than ever before—and yet the provision of this care has also proved to be politically and legally controversial. Phil Duran and Dr. Katherine Spencer will examine key ethical and legal concerns practitioners must consider when working with this population.

While professional codes of conduct and ethical guidelines provide baseline expectations regarding mandated child maltreatment reporting, there remains limited guidance regarding how to incorporate cultural considerations related to reporting when working with youth and their families. This is especially important given that the highest rates of child abuse and neglect are reported among youth from underrepresented and underserved backgrounds. A discussion regarding cultural considerations and practical recommendations is provided to offer guidance when navigating potential disclosure of child maltreatment.
