An essential resource for anyone providing services for individuals with OCD or anxiety disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy using the techniques of exposure and response prevention has helped countless individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) overcome debilitating symptoms and live fuller, more satisfying lives. This volume opens with an overview of the diagnosis and assessment of OCD in adults and delineates an evidence-based conceptual framework for understanding the development, maintenance, and treatment of obsessions and compulsions. The core of the book that follows is a highly practical treatment manual, based on decades of scientific research and clinical refinement, packed with helpful clinical pearls, therapist-patient dialogues, illustrative case vignettes, sample forms and handouts. State-of-the-art strategies for enhancing exposure therapy using inhibitory learning, ACT, and couples-based approaches are described. Readers are also equipped with skills for tailoring treatment to patients with different types of OCD symptoms (e.g., contamination, unacceptable thoughts, challenging presentations such as mental rituals) and for addressing common obstacles to treatment. The book is an essential resource for anyone providing services for individuals with anxiety disorders.

Dr. Tyrel Starks will discuss essential aspects of the theory and practice of motivational interviewing (MI) with couples. In many ways, MI with couples draws upon elements of established MI practice, such as MI spirit, processes, and skills like OARS, that will be familiar to any experienced practitioner. At the same time, working with a couple means forming an alliance with both of the partners individually as well as with the couple as a whole. It also involves allowing partners to speak to one another and helping them to communicate more effectively than they might on their own. Dr. Starks will discuss how established MI practices are adjusted in response to these considerations.

As our aging population continues to grow, women’s health and aging are expected to become areas of increasing clinical focus for psychologists. Older adult women are projected to be a large portion of the aging population and with advanced age comes increased likelihood of multiple medical conditions and associated functional changes. Additionally, personal beliefs about aging can influence one’s engagement in health behavior, life satisfaction, and mental health wellbeing. Dr. Nicole Reynolds will explore how aging impacts older adult women and discuss strategies for how to promote aging well through a biopsychosocial lens including reframing aging, addressing functional limitations, planning for end-of-life, and risk mitigation strategies.
